you do not want to get wet) be packed in water proof sacks or plastic so that it does not get wet if it rains!!<br \/>It is ideal to pack your Kili Trekking gear in a duffle bag as close to these dimensions as possible: 40x18x18 and right around 33 pounds (15 kg). This makes it easier for the porters to carry!!<br \/>You do not have to get everything as it appears on the list \u2013 this is just recommendations!<\/p><div id=\"content_inner\"><div id=\"main\"><div id=\"main_inner\"><div class=\"single_post_module\"><div id=\"post-1298\" class=\"post-1298 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-gear category-prep category-tips tag-africa tag-hiking tag-kilimanjaro tag-packing tag-tanzania\"><div class=\"single_post_content\"><div class=\"entry\"><h4>Base Layers<\/h4><p>Remember, do not wear cotton! It does not dry at high altitudes and can chafe. Wear fabric this is breathable, synthetic, and moisture-wicking.<\/p><ul class=\"fancy_list\"><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Moisture wicking long sleeve tee-shirts (2)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Moisture wicking tee-shirts (2)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Moisture wicking sports bra tank \u2013 two-in-one is a space savor! (1)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Moisture wicking sports bra (1)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Long underwear pants (1)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Underwear (3 total, 2 that are moisture wicking)<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"pullquote3 aligncenter steelblue_text\">Did you know you go through five temperate climates in just a few days? Be ready with lots of layers and pack lightly for all seasons. Before leaving, test that you can actually wear your clothes over each other.<\/span><\/p><h4>Middle &amp; Outer Layers<\/h4><ul class=\"fancy_list\"><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Mid-weight, moisture-wicking Smartwool long sleeve shirt (1)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Sweatshirt for warmer sleeping (1)(optional)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Fleece windwall\u00a0jacket\u00a0(1)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Waterproof hard shell jacket\u00a0with hood (1): breathable and water-resistant<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Fleece pants\u00a0(1): I only wore these summit night over long underwear and under my waterproof pants<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Convertible shorts-to-pants hiking pants (1): you will wear these everyday<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Waterproof pants\u00a0(1): worn over fleece pants summit night<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Gloves or mittens: warm, waterproof recommended<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Medium gloves: something warmer than glove liners, but not as heavy as summit gloves<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Glove liners: thin and synthetic, to be worn under gloves for added warm and protection from frostbite<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Knit hat (that covers ears)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Balaclava<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Sun hat with brim or bandana (I used bandana)<\/li><\/ul><h4>Footwear<\/h4><ul class=\"fancy_list\"><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Ankle high supportive hiking boots: break these in before the climb<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Shoes for lounging around camp: you\u2019ll want to give your feet a break from the boots, I used\u00a0Keens\u00a0because they were easy to slip on over socks<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Spare plastic bag to hold your dirty camp shoes<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Hiking socks (3) pairs: Smartwool suggested<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Sock liners (2) pairs: pack thin, synthetic\u2014they stretch and cause blisters if too small<\/li><\/ul><h4>What I Rented<\/h4><p>Rent what you don\u2019t already own or need to own after the climb.<\/p><ul class=\"fancy_list\"><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Insulated down parka<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Walking poles<em>: <\/em>these were my BFF\u2014 seriously, I don\u2019t know how people climb without them<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Sleeping bag: warm, four-season sleeping bag. -15\u00b0 C\/ 0\u00b0 f<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Warm, thick winter gloves<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Gaiters: try them on first, apparently not one-size-fits all (I learned this the hard way)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Balaclava<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Toilet tent: it is so worth your money<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Sleeping pad<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Duffel bag<\/li><\/ul><h4>Sleeping &amp; Carrying Equipment<\/h4><ul class=\"fancy_list\"><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Medium sized daypack\u00a0(25-30 liters):\u00a0 used to carry essentials needed during the day like clothes, water, raincoat, warm clothing, camera, and food<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Daypack rain shield cover: some daypacks already come with one<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Sleeping bag liner (brought but never used)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Dry sacks: I had a 4L, 8l, 16L, and 32L Sea to Summit bags to stay organized,\u00a0or you can also use plastic bags to protect equipment from rain<\/li><\/ul><h4>Drinking<\/h4><p>Do not carry any water on the outside of your pack on summit night, it will freeze. Protect it with insulation or under clothing.<\/p><ul class=\"fancy_list\"><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Platypus water bag: ideal so you don\u2019t have to stop to drink<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Camelbak 32 oz water bottle (as backup)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Water filtering iodine chemical tablets<\/li><\/ul><h4>Personals &amp; Toileteries<\/h4><ul class=\"fancy_list\"><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Basic toiletries: soap, deodorant, tooth brush, cotton Q-tips, floss, hairbrush, toothpaste, etc\u2026<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Bug spray: Deet 25-50%<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Toilet paper: you can buy travel packs from Target or take the cardboard out of a roll and store in plastic zip lock bag<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Feminine hygiene cleansing wipes<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Wet wipes: used for \u201cshowering\u201d and cleaning hands and face\u2014bring more than you think you need, and then some (inexpensive drugstore ones work fine)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Anti-itch cream for bug bites: the mosquitoes are only in the rain forest and are enormous<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Face cleanser: I found it easiest to use Neutragena face wipes<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Sun screen and lip protection, SPF 30+<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Contact solution &amp; case<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Dry shampoo (optional)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Nalgene bottle to pee in: the last thing I wanted to do was leave the warmness of the tent in the frigid night air to go to the toilet tent<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Go Girl or a pee funnel: for use with the Nalgene pee bottle\u00a0 (didn\u2019t wind up needing either, but glad I had it)<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">You are climbing a mountain, not entering a beauty contest. No need to bring makeup.<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Panty liners to keep underwear fresher longer<\/li><\/ul><h4>First Aid Items<\/h4><ul class=\"fancy_list\"><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Advil: this helps with\u00a0Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), I took two every morning and never ached or got sick<\/li><li class=\"circle_arrow steelblue_sprite\">Mini first-aid kit that includes ace-bandages, blister kit (tape, neosporin and band-aids), antibacterial cream, antibiotics for travelers\u2019 diarrhea, antihistamines, cold and flu medications, throat lozenges, and altitude medications.
